Nocturnal Caprices

SE0066

for Solo Guitar and String Orchestra        Duration: 11'

This piece was composed in memory of Hans Werner Henze, teacher, mentor and friend of the composer until his death in 2012. Henze was one of the contemporary composers who wrote a great deal for the guitar and encouraged his students to do so. This piece is in three movements, the central one of which is a cadenza for solo guitar.

The Susato Dances

SE0075

for String Quartet                                          Duration: 11'

This piece was commissioned and premiered by the Fitzwilliam String Quartet, one of the world's foremost string quartets, who performed Shostakovich's music for the composer himself. The Susato Dances was premiered in the Golden Hall of the Peterhof Palace in St Petersburg in May 2004. The piece takes music from Tielman Susato's 1551 collection of dances called Danserye and reworks them for a 21st century audience.

for Guitar                                                          Duration: 8'

This piece was written in 1988 and premiered by Norwegian guitarist Asbjorn Voster at the Royal Academy of Music in London in 1989. Taking as inspiration the various works for solo guitar by his teacher and mentor Hans Werner Henze based on the work of William Shakespeare, this short suite sums up certain aspects of the characters from three of Shakespeare's play; Richard II, Hamlet and Prospero (from the Tempest).

Requiem

SE0097

for Choir                                          Duration: 18'

The first version of this Requiem was commissioned in 1994 by Ramsey Silver, the director of Banks' Music Publications in the UK, and it was subsequently published by them. Around 10 years later, the piece was extensively revised and subsequently premiered by the Indianapolis Chorale conducted by Gonçalo Lourenço in the USA. This is not a version of the Requiem Mass, but intersperses three phrases from the Missa pro Defunctis with Russian folk song material.
